How We Grade the Research
Not every compound has the same quality of evidence. The badge at the top of each profile tells you how far the science has progressed.
Cell, biochemical, receptor, or ex vivo research. Useful for understanding biology, but not proof of an effect in people.
Primarily animal and laboratory studies. Human effectiveness and long-term safety remain uncertain.
Some human exposure or clinical research exists, but data may be small, regional, short-term, or incomplete.
Randomized human trials or active clinical-development programs provide stronger evidence, though the compound may remain investigational.
An FDA-approved finished prescription drug contains the same active ingredient. Approval applies only to the approved product, indication, formulation, and labeling.
